Background
A leading European automotive OEM introduced a new generation of premium SUVs equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and panoramic imaging. These systems rely on multiple HD cameras—external and internal—for 360° imaging, blind spot detection, driver monitoring, and AEB. Due to harsh usage conditions (outdoor mounting, frequent high-pressure car washes, complex wiring), the client required a high-reliability, fully waterproof connector solution that could also meet compact size and signal integrity demands.
Challenge
The project presented a combination of technical and environmental challenges:
- Extreme Operating Conditions: -40°C to +105°C temperature shocks, continuous vibration, rain, snow, mud, salt, and high-pressure washes.
- Zero-Leakage Requirement: Even minimal moisture ingress could disable camera input and compromise driving safety.
- High-Speed Video Data: Real-time transmission of 4K+ video at up to 120fps required excellent impedance control and shielding.
- Limited Space: Tight installation locations like mirrors and door panels required ultra-compact connectors.
- Automotive-Grade Compliance: Components needed to meet standards such as USCAR-2, LV214, ISO 16750 for long-term reliability.
Solution
Renhotec delivered a customized IP6K9K-rated waterproof FAKRA connector solution, purpose-built for rugged automotive environments.
Waterproof Performance
- Multi-level sealing: radial O-rings, rear over-molding, and a zinc/stainless steel shell.
- Certified to IP6K9K and tested to withstand thermal cycling, UV, salt spray, and oil exposure.
- Passed IPX7 immersion test (1m for 30 minutes) with no water ingress, maintaining ≥50MΩ insulation resistance and 300V AC withstand voltage.
